Comp. Tutorial: Virtual RAM

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Recently, my computer was slowing down and was being, well, slow. So, I checked DxDiag and it said, "256 SD RAM". I bought a 512 SD RAM and put it in. I am selling my two old ones so check out Kijiji.ca. Anyways, my computer did NOT speed up that much. I cleaned out the CPU, removed the dust and what not. I defragmented, disk clean ups, registry clean ups, the works. In the end, it wasn't worth it. So, before I stood up to throw my garbage of a computer through the window, I remembered something. Virtual RAM. It may not speed my computer up a lot, but still. The 2nd best thing to buying ACTUAL RAM. So, I took my old 4GB USB Drive and put it in for 512 Paging File. 1118 Paging File size. It worked and I speeded it up a little more than before. So, here is the tutorial on how to add Virtual RAM to your computer.

What You Need:
Computer
Spare USB Drive

TUTORIAL:
1. Plug in your old usb drive into the computer usb port.

2. Right click My Computer on your desktop and select 'Properties'.

3. Click the Advanced Tab and hit settings under the performance tab.

4. Now hit the Advanced Tab again and click the Change button at the bottom of the window.

5. Click your USB Drive letter and click 'Custom Size'.

6. Now, type something reasonable. Don't put 4096 if your computer can only handle 1GB.

7. If my current RAM was 256, I would type 256 so it doubles to make 512.

8. Also, the Initial and Maximum size should be the same.

9. After making sure have done everything correctly, click OK, OK again, and then Apply.

It will say restart your computer, so restart your computer and it shoud work.
Congratulations! You have successfully added Virtual RAM to your computer for FREE!

*I take no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your computer.
